The self-assessment allows individuals and data teams to examine their status on each of the Data Leadership Competencies and develop a plan for building competencies based on the results of the assessment. An individual can use the self-assessment to guide their own professional development as a data leader. The group of individuals who make up the state’s data team can use the Team Profile Tool to look across their individual self-assessment results to identify any gaps in their collective competencies. DaSy recommends that state Part C and Part B 619 leaders use the Team Profile Tool with their data teams to get the most out of the self-assessment process.
Individual Use
An individual rates their level of knowledge and skill on each of the competencies, indicates whether the competency is essential to their job responsibilities, and whether this is a competency in which they would like to improve. This information is used to develop a learning plan to address any gaps. The individual can reflect alone or in consultation with their supervisor on how their status on each competency aligns with their current position and with any future roles they aspire to hold.
Team Use
Not every individual on the state data team has to be skilled in every competency. Instead, the team can master the competencies collectively, with different individuals having different competencies depending on their roles and responsibilities. The Team Profile Tool allows a data team to merge the results of individual self assessments to create a team profile. The team profile allows the team to look across individual members to see which competencies have been mastered by which team members and which competencies need to be mastered.
The Self Assessment package includes multiple files including a Guidance document. We strongly recommend the user read the guidance document before beginning the self-assessment or the use of the Team Profile tool.
The Self Assessment and Team Profile Tool are excel-based tools that have been created in two versions: one set with macros and one set without macros. Both sets of files have the same functionality, but the navigation is easier in the files with macros if you can use macros. If you use a screen-reader or cannot use macros for some other reason, download the version without the macros. Detailed instructions for the tools without macros are included in a separate pdf.
